The African bird pepper belongs to the nightshade family (Solanaceae). It mostly belongs to the Capsicum frutescens or Capsicum annuum plant families.
The African bird pepper, also known as peri-peri or piri-piri, is a small, highly potent chili. It typically measures just 1 to 2.5 centimeters long. It tapers to a blunt point. These vibrant, fiery red peppers pack a massive punch, ranking between 100,000 to 225,000 on the Scoville scale.
At up to 225,000 Scoville Heat Units, it is around 30 to 40 times hotter than a standard jalapeño pepper. It delivers an instant, searing, sharp heat with a bright finish.
These peppers have grown wild in Africa for centuries, but are now grown as a crop in places like Uganda, Malawi, and Zimbabwe. They are famous as the main ingredient in traditional spicy sauces and meat rubs
